Ceilings in general are rather hard work. <long hours on back breaking scaffolds, etc.> However, the visual effect of a fully decorated ceiling is certainly worth the effort.
Skies are a favorite as they are relaxing to look at and change in color and depth with the varying light throughout the day.
Painted architecture and ornamentation on a ceiling is also very attractive and creates a wonderful illusionist effects as the viewer is always positioned at a good standpoint.

Walls in Italy are normally plastered with a lime mortar, this is an ideal surface to paint on, it has excellent absorbency and the sand lime mortar gives a strong musty-faceted base for the paint to key to.
Interior walls in general are smoother and therefore have less key for the paint to adhere to. The use of stronger glues in the paint (i.e. casein) is necessary. This does present a small problem as the paint is now layered in films which are more fragile and susceptible to damage from damp. However, walls inside are less exposed to atmospheric wear.

Painting on panels or stretched canvas has many advantages. Canvas can be stretched onto batons in situ or delivered with the stretcher bars like a painting. In the first case the wooden batons are fixed to the corners of the walls. The batons also follow the contours of window frames and doors. The canvas is stretched and nailed to these batons. The canvas is usually already painted at this stage, the gap between the wall and the canvas can be filled with a soft fabric. This is good for both thermal and noise insulation. The rough edge on the batons is neatly covered with a thin band of material.
Landscapes are of course a good subject for canvas as well as imitation tapestries and patterns. Canvas has a maximum width of six metres, which we think covers most people’s walls so that no seams are visible.
Rigid panels are also useful when used as doors, sliding or hinged, traditionally they were mounted in wooden or plaster frame work, but they have a pleasing modern look when directly hung on the wall.
